Horsehead Eolin Full View by chadparker42 Horsehead Eolin Full View by chadparker42
I shaped and assembled all the pieces you see in this violin except the chinrest, tail piece, and pegs. The fingerboard was store-bought but had to be shaved thinner and the bridge came as a blank but I had to shape it to match the fingerboard.
The brass windows hold dark mica panels intended to reveal inner illumination, but sadly this part of the project never achieved a desirable effect and is currently inactive.

There's no holes in the top of the sound box. So is it actually functional?

It's gorgeous, though, you did a fantastic job. <3

I know a violinist that would freak over this. Of course so would my 11 year old son who plays! This is really cool!

You should really have some f holes or the like put it in so it can make a nice sound and look cool at the same time

Thanks for the idea. Several of the designs included f-hole motifs of inlaid brass, but the body is essentially solid-bodied so actual holes would go no where and provide no improved sound. At the recommendation of my friend, Josh, I replaced the f-hole idea with the volt-meter to make the whole piece a little more steamy.

Perhaps you could put some kind of electric thing through it and make it an electric violin?

Beautiful! But aren't the metal pieces impairing the sound?

Thanks for the comment! The violin relies far more on a quality piezo pickup than any acoustic resonance for its sound, much like a typical electric violin from Yamaha--in fact, my original goal exploded from a mere mod of my old Yamaha e-violin. This is built completely from scratch with a few store-bought parts including an NS Realist pickup.

The violin is extremely heavy as far as violins go, but it's quite playable and sounds great through an amp or PA, very similar in sound to an acoustic violin. I have a Realist violin pickup under the bridge which provides excellent electric sound quality. When heard acoustically, the instrument is quiet but responsive.

Nice! Shame about the weight, but it's really gorgeous! My dad designs unique violins, you'd probably dig his stuff. [link] His distributor is about to go back into production on the wooden electric "Spitfire" violin, I'm dying to nab one and make a steampunked version. :D
